Passkeys Chris Coyier

December 14, 2022

Apple made a big deal of their support of Passkeys at their latest developer conference. And rightfully so. I hope they keep making a big deal of it. It really seems like the future of authentication and we should get moving on it, as an industry.

Fascinatingly to me, Apple didn’t invent this very Apple-sounding word. I guess they did invent it! Still — It’s a standard that everyone will use.

Just this month Google is rolling out support in Chrome. Microsoft is already in on all this. This is great news, as Passkeys can’t really take off unless there is broad support of the technology, such that it motivates other software teams to start implementing it. So far so good:

On Monday, PayPal said US-based users would soon have the option of logging in using FIDO-based passkeys, joining Kayak, eBay, Best Buy, CardPointers, and WordPress as online services that will offer the password alternative. In recent months, Microsoft, Apple, and Google have all updated their operating systems and apps to enable passkeys.

Even 1Password is going to help — which is great for syncing them across devices and sharing them between users and such.

I’d like to tell you CodePen is working to implement Passkeys now, but our development schedule has some bigger fish on it at the moment. I’m sure we will though eventually as this is great technology and doesn’t seem terribly difficult to implement.

🤘
